My partner and I made a video game for Bevy Game Jam 6! The theme was ‘chain reaction’ so we immediately thought of chainmail, ie those email chains in the early 2000s you’d get that would tell you to forward to everyone.
I wrote the original letter from Grandma after researching one of the most effective computer viruses in history and included some cheeky references to that. It’s totally wild to me that a virus that infected 10% of all computers resulted in no charges being filed, on account of there weren’t any laws against that at the time. In terms of actual game play mechanics, we were going for a mix of metroidvania and portal mechanics. This was a nine day game jam and we both have full-time jobs, so there were more things we would have loved to add but were pretty happy with how it turned out!
A screenshot of the actual game play. You’re a little ball standing near a computer that you’re about to use to forward Grandma’s email.
I contributed some of the mechanics, like the robots that zap you if you get to close, but mostly worked on level design. My favorite level is the second to last level, which is strongly inspired by some of the Pokemon ice skating or trick house levels.
A letter from grandma prompts you to break into a data center.
Trying to capture early 2000s nostalgia for a cute puzzle game.
